Chapter Twenty-One
Aiden
âGrab your glow sticks, itâs time to rave!â Olive waved her arms in front of her face as she pretended to start a lawn mower. I checked to make sure she wasnât having a seizure.
Emma joined in, making a box around her head with her hands. Duke shook his head and slapped a hand on my shoulder. I had my work cut out for me.
Even though we were singing for the competition, I figured Olive would need some moves to help with stage presence. Emma immediately wanted to join in on the fun.
Surrounded by the vibrant colors of their living room, we readied for our first practice. Morning sunlight glowed through the sheer curtains, spotlighting their outrageous moves. The open balcony door allowed the autumn air to circulate, cooling my heated forehead.
âOkay, ladies, letâs get busy.â I clapped my hands and bent to tie my shoelaces tighter.
Emma chuckled. âOh, that sounds sexual.â
Olive blushed and hid a chuckle under her hands.
Clearing my throat, I stood. âLetâs start with the basics. Since you know how to do the Running Man, letâs clean up your form.â
I showed them a slowed down version, keeping my steps precise. They imitated the moves with ease. We sped up the pace until we were all doing the Running Man.
Duke pressed a button on the remote. Music filled the small space. He moved his feet, dancing with the girls. His perfect technique impressed the girls as they clapped.
I stopped and silenced the music. âDuke, you can dance?â
âIâm a man with many layers.â He pinched the collar of his shirt and flicked it upward.
Oliveâs eyes shone. âLike a cake.â
Emma bumped her hip and pointed a finger. âOrganic, gluten-free cake.â
I was trapped in the Twilight Zone.
We moved on to the next shuffle which took the girls a little longer to master. Duke helped as we pointed out where they were going wrong.
Olive caught her shoe and stumbled, nearly taking out the TV. I slipped off her shoes and stood between her and anything that looked expensive or dangerous.
We reviewed a few basic moves before restarting the music. I called out steps while the girls attempted to dance. Duke jumped in and grabbed Emma as they danced together.
Olive swung her hair around as she turned. I stepped in and mimicked her moves. Letting her take the lead, we danced in a circle. Her smile lit up her face, she threw her hands above her head. I took her hand and spun her body until she clutched my chest.
Panting, we laughed and our eyes met. Her nails raked down my chest as I held her close. I glanced at her mouth before meeting her lips. Our tongues tangled, I breathed her into my lungs. She rose on the tips of her feet, drawing closer.
Friendship be damned. Olive was mine. I needed to convince her.
âIs this next Aiden?â Emma asked.
We broke apart and peered over to find Emma and Duke twerking. Duke collapsed on the ground, laughing. âOh shit, I think I pulled something.
